Mother’s Day

Just want to pause for a minute to share how much I appreciate Jenni on Mother’s Day and everyday.

  •  you love us intentionally
  •  you are content to spend the day with us without any big hoopla
  •  you work hard to be healthy on every level for our boys.
  •  you are always beautiful
  • you keep us from living in a dirt house with soiled clothing
  •  you take time to play and document priceless moments

I love you!

P.S. Chance say: “Happy Mothers Day Mommy. Could you get me some pretzels?”

She Said Yes!!!

Mr. Non Romanticist is my name…No Seriously…

I never actually proposed before we got married the first time.  I have been reminded for the last nine years by someone to be left unnamed.  So I decided this would be a perfect time to make up for it and step up my romance game.  Last night was our 10th anniversary from our first date and it was our small group night.  Perfect time to do a real proposal and get video proof.  Here it is for those of you who haven’t seen it yet on Jenni’s blog.

I am so excited to spend the rest of my life with a woman who loves God and who is constantly striving to be a better wife, mom and friend. Love you honey

Love Is Demanding

I never thought I would write about one of the most over used and most often ignored passages in The Bible.

It really hit me when a guy from our small group shared his testimony and read this passage along with it.  This verse makes more sense to me and is more clear to me now than the 100 times I had read/heard it before.  You know the saying, “when the student is ready, the teacher appears”?  Well, it applies here.  I now see how true that cliche really is.

Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (The Message)

There are a couple of lines that really stand out to me in light of my experiences with love this year.

Love never gives up

Love cares more for others than for self…In relationships – especially marriage, it is easy to do “stuff” for your spouse and think, “I just racked up some points.”  What it’s saying instead of considering the “points”, we do these things JUST because we want to care for our spouse and honor our relationship.  This also helps us avoid building up unspoken expectations.  According to this verse, there are no points in “real” love.

Love doesn’t keep score of the sins of others and puts up with anything… This one really hit home for me.  I can’t relive the times my wife hurt me so I can justify rude, hurtful or, in my case, silent behavior.  Once it’s forgiven, it is to never be used against the one you love again.

I have gained a fresh perspective on loving someone unconditionally as well as living under the illusion of love.  I have been guilty of claiming to love but not having all the attributes listed above.  I have experienced the claim of love for me with many of these pieces missing as well.  I truly believe now that if I look for someone else to love me like this description, there will most likely be disappointment.  If I choose to love to the best of my ability like this, my love may come back to me more purely than I ever expected.

I am called to give it my best effort.

Can any of us claim to have perfect love for anyone or anything?  These are pretty demanding statements.

How have you experienced love like this?
How have you shown love like this?

I would actually love to hear about it.

Birthday Tribute

My amazing wife turned the big 30 yesterday.  I let her sleep in a bit by getting Chance up and ready for school. Then I dropped him off at Pre-School and came home to look for a solution to our broken dryers, yes we had two of them.

My friend Brian has a lot of great connections in the area so he came over and helped me load up the dryers in his Ram Pickup and we headed out to Hillsboro. We stopped off at one of his friends businesses that does only appliance repair and sales.  A-best Appliance in Hillsboro on Main St. and I highly recommend them.  Roger takes a quick look at our Whirlpool and says “that is a great dryer” and the other one to be unnamed, “that is a piece of crap”.  Long story short, he had my dryer totally fixed and running perfectly in about 10 minutes flat.  Best of all No-Charge!  He even took in the junk dryer to scrap out for me.  Now we have a perfectly good dryer and the laundry can continue to be taken care.

Yesterday in the afternoon I did some work while Jenni gave guitar lessons.  At 4:30 we dropped Chance off at Wendy’s (his former nanny) and we went out for a nice dinner with a few friends at Portland City Grill.  We had a really nice time and it was the first nice dinner we have had together in a very long time.

I have had some time to reflect on what an incredible woman I married.  Jenni has pushed me to be the best I can be, she has supported me when I was down and felt like giving up on many occasions.  She totally trusts me to lead our family and encourages me to make hard decisions for us in all matters.  I know she loves me because she works hard to take care of our house and to feed me like a king.  The talent I appreciate most about her is her incredible amount of love and patience as a Mother to Chance.  I love you babe and I look forward to your 40th!

Got to go!
